This morning a man walked into my El car to make an announcement. A loud announcement. "Hi, many of you already know me. My name is X. I was recently released from prison and I'm trying to find a job that will help me get back on my feet. I'm hungry and..." The sound of his voice trailed as I turned up the volume on my iPod.
"Turn it up and tune it out," I thought.
He bristled past me to continue making his announcement to the other half of the car. The man on my left called after him and held out two Chewy brand granola bars. I let go of the seat post to let Mr. X accept the breakfast offering.
I don't carry breakfast with me, but even if I did, would I have offered it? Music is like an invisible cloak. "Sorry, I'm lost in my own world. I'm not responsible for not acknowledging you." Googling this subject doesn't yield many fruitful results, but I did find this article: Tuning in to an iPod means tuning out the world around you - Features

I venture to say that while it is true people can hide underneath the headphones of their Ipods, I think we all have to assess each situation as it happens, especially those in which we cannot tell if what we're seeing and hearing is true.---Mom
