The weekend was wonderful. Friday my mom and I went out shopping for most of the day. Turns out, Target is the social mecca of Keene, NH on Friday mornings between 9:30 and 11 am. I ran into my old skating coach, music teacher, and my Aunt! After getting the Target run out of the way, Mom and I went to look at rings (one of which would become my birthday present), ate lunch at Subway, then toured around the West Street Shopping Center and killed time before my dad got off work. Then the three of us ate sundaes at Friendlies.
Saturday was the hottest day of the summer. With no air conditioning, we had to leave the house. We took the dogs (Cooper and Nori) in the car with us, and drove to Pisgah State Park. After hiking about 15 minutes, the reservoir appears on your left. We spent the afternoon picnicking, swimming, and I even had fun jumping and diving off the rocks.
After a long day at Pisgah, we went out to eat at a new Mexican restaurant that opened by the Colony Mill: La Carreta.Sunday was my birthday - I turned 23. It's funny that that age sounds so young to me. I think that because my co-workers are about 3-5 years older than me, I keep assuming I'm their age. Not so. We had a little gathering of my family: aunts & uncles, cousins, my grandma, and parents. Once everyone left, my grandma, mom, and I watched The Holiday. Then I said goodbye to my grandmother until Thanksgiving. Mom and I sat out on the swing on the deck, just chatting. She calls these her "Step-Mom Moments" because she says she'll remember them forever.
After all the traveling back and forth to school, I no longer get upset by the thought of leaving home for another couple months. Don't get me wrong, I always miss my family and the beauty of NH, but there's always reasons I want to come "home" - Chicago home.
