Over email, I came to a realization this morning. I live a life under the wrong names. I'll share what I wrote to Neil:"Let me start by saying my last name should be Johnson. Katrina Johnson. That's because when my great grandfather came over on the boat from Sweden in the 20's, his last name was Jansen. The Ellis Island folks, however, thought their were too many Jansens in America, Jansen being the anglicized version is Johnson. My great grandfather, not knowing what else to say, gave the name of the farm he left in Sweden: Shiny Brook. So Shiny Brook became Shonbeck and that's why I'm related to every Shonbeck in the U.S.
Katrina is less of an interesting story. Again, my name is not what was originally intended for me. My parents wanted to name me Christina, but my Dad's friend at work named his child that months before I arrived. Needless to say, they wanted to be original so a new name was settled on: Katrina. Derived from Katherine, the meaning, 'pure.'"
I should add also, that Katrina doesn't have any family significance. According to my parents, "It just sounded good with Shonbeck."

This entry brought a smile to my face and by the end a laugh. Always nice to catch up on the lives of friends on Sunday afternoon, sitting in the window of Brewbakers.
