Art & Cross Dressing

What do the two have in common? My weekend involved both and here's how:

On Friday, the weather was hot and threatening rain. I returned home from work and changed in a jean skirt and tank top. Jon was going to pick me up so we could go grocery shopping and make dinner together. Without thinking, I left the house and added only my favorite pair of flip flops to complete the outfit. Jon had driven straight from work, so after we finished shopping at Whole Foods, we decided to cook there. Note to self: wine after a long week makes for a very tired Katrina. To make a long story short, we decide to enjoy the night in.

Fast forward to the morning. The temperature is now 41 degrees and I'm still wearing a jean skirt, tank top, and flip flops. Because we had to take the El back to my place before going to Artropolis at the Merchandise Mart (thanks Lesley!), I dressed up in Jon's smallest pair of khakis, an over sized sweatshirt, and navy blue vest. Just call me Gunther.*

Artropolis was fabulous! We spent most of our time at NEXT. I could describe it in my own words, but the NEXT website does such a good job I'll just copy it here: "NEXT will include works from both commercial and non-commercial arts organizations as well as galleries, project spaces, artist collectives, art publications and key private contemporary collections. A virtual clearing-house for the best of contemporary art, NEXT presents a new, selectively curated exhibition format that brings together—in one exhibition space—the most cutting-edge contemporary artists and arts organizations in the world." I think my favorite was the construction paper artist.

*Side story: Had I been a boy, my parents wanted to call me Gunther.
